The Ragdoll Cat and their characters

Colours and Patterns

Because of its open-minded and peaceful character, the Ragdoll cat is a family cat.

Any kind of aggression is foreign to her and she possesses an astonishing level of tolerance and patience.

Ragdolls are absolute family cats, love children and other pets. They also get along very well with dogs.

They are very affectionate, cuddly and patient. They always want to be with you. When you are in the shower, the cats sit in front of you.

Ragdolls always want to be close to people. Not intrusive, but always present.

They love having company and will follow you everywhere you go.

The Ragdoll is often compared to a dog. It is also called the dog among cats.

They are quick to learn, attentive, greet you happily when you come home, accompany you throughout the house, and love to be in the middle of the action.

You can also teach them tricks. They are also one of the few cat breeds that like to travel. Being there is everything :)

Ragdolls are rather calm and not overly active, but they enjoy playing and are playful without uncontrolled romping.

When it comes to the Ragdoll breed, gender is completely irrelevant when it comes to character. Both genders - male and female - are very affectionate and completely cuddly and in need of love.

Ragdoll cats can also be kept in apartments or houses and do not necessarily need to be allowed outside.

The name "Ragdoll" comes from their tendency to relax and hang limply like a rag doll when picked up.

They have medium-length to long, silky fur with a colorpoint pattern, striking large, deep blue eyes, and a strong, muscular build with a broad chest and bushy tail.

The traditional Ragdoll base coat colors are:

  • Seal: a very dark brown that can appear almost black at the points (mask, ears, legs, tail). The body can range from beige to brown or cream. Blue: a deep blue-gray at the points. The body color is ivory or bluish-white.

  • Chocolate: a light chocolate brown at the points. The body is ivory to cream.

  • Lilac (or Frost): a very light dove gray, sometimes with an apricot sheen. The body color is almost white.

These base colors occur in various pattern variations, often referred to as patterns:

  • Colourpoint: In this variation, the points (ears, mask, legs, and tail) are well-colored and significantly darker than the rest of the body. The body is lighter and harmonizes with the points.Colourpoint Ragdolls do not have any white markings.

  • Mitted: Mitted Ragdolls have points like colorpoints, but also white "gloves" on their front paws, white "boots" on their hind legs, a white chin, and a white stripe running from the bib down the belly to the base of the tail.

  • Bicolor: This variety is characterized by a high proportion of white. A key feature is the inverted "V" on the face, which is white. The legs, chest, and belly are also white. The body color is lighter than the point color.

  • Lynx (Tabby): Each of the above-mentioned colors and pattern variations can also occur as a lynx, meaning the points have a striped, tabby pattern. This often appears as an "M" or "W" shape in the mask and rings on the legs and tail.

  • Tortoiseshell: This variety displays a tortoiseshell pattern where patches of red/cream mix with another base color (e.g., seal or blue). Tortie Ragdolls, like other cat breeds, are almost exclusively female because the gene for the tortoiseshell pattern is linked to the X chromosome.

  • Torbie: A combination of Tortie and Lynx, resulting in a striped tortoiseshell pattern. Torbie Ragdolls are also almost exclusively female.

Color development in Ragdoll kittens is a long process; they are born pure white, and their final coloring is often not complete until they are three to four years old.
